Manulife Asia Care Survey 2024

Have you found time to set goals for your future self? Let’s say, 10 years from now. A decade-long journey is equal to 5.25 million minutes of life. Yet, it only takes a second to focus on your well-being.

The Asia Care Survey 2024 shows how people across the region perceive their current and future physical, mental, and financial well-being.

In Hong Kong, Manulife’s study of more than 1,000 residents took place in January 2024. We invite you to explore the survey’s findings and discover how Manulife can be their partner for progress.

Respondents are unsure they will achieve their desired levels of physical, mental and financial well-being.

Respondents in Hong Kong feel the least ready for their ‘financial’ & ‘physical’ well-being in a decade, with 15 points separating their ‘desired’ and ‘expected’ levels of future satisfaction.

People also rate physical well-being as the most crucial attribute, while mental welfare is considered the least important feature. In fact, mental well-being is a vital measure of your overall health, as it can often act as an alarm bell signalling future physical ailments.

Let’s take a closer look at the challenges people face:

Protecting your health is protecting your wealth.

Having good physical and mental health can positively impact your financial health. It can help prevent chronic illnesses and reduce the need for costly medical treatments. As a result, you could face lower healthcare expenses and less disruption to your financial goals.

People in their 30s have the least confidence in their mental well-being

When rating their mental well-being a decade from now, respondents in their 30s have a more negative outlook than younger and older age groups.

Meanwhile, certain physical and mental illnesses concern the younger generation (aged 25-29) more than older age groups. These include diabetes, liver diseases, chronic lower respiratory disease, flu and pneumonia, depression and sleep disorders.

Respondents aged 30-39 tend to worry more about cancer, renal disease, overweight, stress, and anxiety. At the same time, people in their 50s are anxious about heart disease, stroke, loneliness, and cognitive impairment. Quickly addressing these age groups' health needs and concerns is critical to their future well-being.

What can I do?

Not only do we hope for longer lives, but we also want to remain healthy as we grow older. Our survey revealed that 72% of respondents are actively changing their current lifestyles to prevent sickness and achieve better health outcomes in the future.

According to the World Mental Health Report, mental health is as important as physical fitness. Mentally unwell people may face various risks, including physical impairments, loss of productivity, and reduced social interactions. Some of these factors may already be present, while some could develop over the long term.

It is vital to address these mental health issues early on and ensure you have access to the necessary support and resources to maintain your well-being. For example, stomach issues, muscular-skeletal, and skin complaints are often suffered by people who have been under prolonged stress. Dealing with anxiety at the outset could help prevent the onset of these conditions.

Understanding the role of sleep in maintaining your health can help you prioritise a good night’s rest. This will help you be today, tomorrow and long into the future.

66% and 63% of respondents agree that having sufficient insurance cover can help them achieve their desired level of physical and mental well-being respectively.
